The art of character development – Bringing Kelly to life

In the world of storytelling, crafting believable, dynamic characters is crucial for engaging readers and enriching the narrative. Today, I want to delve into the process of character development using one of the vibrant characters from my upcoming “What If” series—Kelly, the best friend of our protagonist, Mia.

Kelly is not just a side character; she’s the heartbeat of comic relief and a pillar of support in the story. With her vivacious and somewhat provocative demeanor, she brings a unique flavor to the ensemble, often lighting up the room (or the page!) with her presence.

The genesis of Kelly

When conceptualizing Kelly, I wanted someone who could both contrast with and complement Mia. While Mia navigates her emotional rediscoveries, Kelly is the unwavering friend, the kind who brings a spark of lightness to the heavy chapters. Her provocative nature isn’t just about pushing boundaries but also about challenging Mia to step out of her comfort zone and embrace life’s unpredictabilities with a grin.

Crafting vivacity and depth

Creating a character as lively as Kelly involved balancing her bold traits with vulnerabilities that aren’t immediately apparent. Her humor and zest are her armor, her way of dealing with the world. This layering is crucial—it turns what could be a one-dimensional “funny friend” trope into a well-rounded confidante whose interactions with main characters add depth to their lives and to the storyline.

Kelly in action

Throughout the series, you’ll see Kelly in various lights—cracking jokes, offering a shoulder to cry on, and sometimes, being surprisingly insightful. Her interactions are pivotal; they not only add levity but also allow for moments of profound emotional support. She challenges Mia and others around her to confront their fears and often acts as the catalyst for change without ever overshadowing the main narrative.

Why readers rove Kelly

Kelly resonates with readers because everyone knows a Kelly (mine is based on a real friend of mine who mirrors the character almost entirely). She’s that friend who insists you’re better than you believe and pushes you into the pool at parties. But more than that, she represents the kind of friendship that’s rare and full of unconditional love and laughter, making the tough times a little easier to bear.

In Kelly, we see the power of a well-developed supporting character—someone who enhances the story’s emotional landscape and provides a balance to the protagonist’s journey. Through her, I aim to celebrate the unsung heroes in our lives—the friends who make our world a better place, one laugh at a time.

Stay tuned to see how Kelly’s presence unfolds in the “What If” series, bringing light and laughter in ways that only she can.
